Dear Colleagues

We are excited to host the main event of the Plant Nutrition discipline, the International Plant Nutrition Colloquium (IPNC). On behalf of the council members and the local organizing committee, I am cordially inviting you to participate in the XVII International Plant Nutrition Colloquium to be held at the Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center (ICEC), Turkey, during 19-22 August, 2013.

A well-documented rapid increase in population growth and thus a growing demand for food production with enhanced nutritional quality are still top major global issues that need to be addressed urgently. Plant nutrition research provides invaluable information in addressing those problems regionally and globally. There are several valuable examples in the past showing great contributions of plant nutrition research to food and nutrient security and thus well-being of human populations. More recently, the growing interaction and synergism between plant nutrition research and molecular biology and genetics opens new windows that broaden our understanding of the molecular and physiological processes controlling plant growth and yield formation.

The colloquium will focus on research topics dealing with agro-ecological, environmental, physiological, genetic and molecular aspects of plant mineral nutrition. Major attention will be paid to i) soil nutrient dynamics, ii) root biology and microbe interactions, iii) nutrient management, iv) ion toxicity and remediation, v) nutrient uptake, transport and remobilisation, vi) nutrient functions and vii) mitigating impacts of mineral nutrition on various environmental stress factors such as drought, salinity and diseases. The main theme of the 17th IPNC will be "Plant nutrition for nutrient and food security”.

The colloquium is open to students, researchers and scientists from public and private sector involved in the fields of plant nutrition, fertilizer production, plant biology, agronomy, horticulture, ecology, environmental sciences and related disciplines. We hope that the colloquium will be an excellent avenue for discussion, exchange and transfer of knowledge, and creating new and fostering existing collaborations.

Istanbul is a unique metropolis located on the meeting point of two continents. It is divided by the heavenly Bosphorus, with the western part of the city in Europe and the eastern part in Asia. Istanbul was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2010. The colloquium venue is located in the heart of the city within walking distance from a number of hotels, shopping centers, restaurants and other attractions. Please check the colloquium website for more information about Istanbul and Turkey, including guided city tours and a variety of pre- and post-colloquium trips.

I look forward to seeing you at the 17th IPNC in Istanbul, a place where the continents meet.

Sincerely,
Ismail Cakmak
President, IPNC
