KONFERANS SERİLERİNİN AMAÇ VE KAPSAMI

The objective of this Conference Series is to present and discuss advanced environmental models and contemporary decision support tools for the sustainable use and development of watersheds, with a view to evaluate, improve, and share developments from around the world. This objective will be accomplished by:

• Identifying examples of good watershed management.
• Evaluating scientific and technological excellence.
• Integration of existing expertise and advancing knowledge.
• Increasing scientific acceptability through publications.
• Enhancing and establishing web-based platforms.
• Offering training programs on advanced models.

The Conferences are structured to address these issues. Pre-conference courses will be offered to provide technical training for Conference participants who could benefit from advanced training in the tools for integrated multi-disciplinary watershed management.

The Second Conference will focus advanced environmental models and contemporary decision support tools for sustainable management of watersheds. Trans-boundary environmental issues (e.g. air pollution, climate change) will be considered. Scientist from all over the world will share knowledge on tools for assessment, prediction, and decision making. Presentation will focus on model applications that identify how to minimize and mitigate anthropogenic effects on the natural capital of watersheds and sustain socioeconomic systems by balancing economic and environmental issues. The use of decision support tools and an integrated ecosystem approach that will benefit both human-kind and the environment will be discussed. Group sessions will identify principles and terms of good watershed management as well as recommendations for implementation of sustainable use and development practices. This will be particularly applicable to watershed management in developing countries.

Further, considering watershed management in an integrated global, continental, or regional context can provide economies of scale and higher levels of environmental protection at lower cost. An example is the application of air models at the continental level would provide atmospheric deposition pollutant estimates for multiple watersheds. Likewise, the global application of climate change models would provide downscaled estimates of future temperature and precipitation to watershed managers and may benefit large coastal model applications. The SuWaMa conference will present the potential for economies of scale in watershed management as well as the open and efficient dissemination of information and data from global, continental, and regional models.

Conference attendees will participate in the development of criteria for recognizing watershed management programs worldwide.

The SuWaMa Conferences Outcome:

• Sharing of knowledge.
• Fostering integration and free exchange of information and data.
• Networking of experts and stakeholders across and throughout the participating countries.
• Expand the use of advanced environmental models and contemporary decision support tools for sustainable use and development of watersheds.
• Promote a global perspective on trans-boundary issues including air pollution and climate change.
• Explore the economies of scale and higher levels of environmental protection at a lower costs by evaluating global, continental, and regional models.
• Establish a Sustainable Watershed Management Seal of Excellence Award initiative that recognizes outstanding programs worldwide.
